Spain’s Luna Sobron opened the 2016 LET Access Series season in style with a magnificent 67, 6 under par on the Riou course at the Terre Blanche Resort in southern France.

The 21-year-old amateur, currently ranked 7th in the Women’s Amateur Golf Rankings, recorded 5 birdies, 3 bogeys and two eagles on her way to a three shot lead over five players, all tied at 3 under par.

“I made two eagles on the 18th and the 9th, I think the last one on the 9th was the best. I hit a seven iron and I had a one meter putt for eagle, something like that. I like the course and in the middle of the round the wind came up,” she commented.

Sobron has spent the winter practicing in the warmth at home in Majorca, working mainly on her short game, and is pleased with the improvements made especially with her putting.

Her good friend and fellow Spaniard, Natalia Escuriola, earned her Ladies European Tour card via the LET Access Series in 2015 and Sobron plans to emulate Escuriola, committing to play full time on LETAS whilst continuing to play her amateur schedule.

“I am going to play all the LETAS events and some amateur tournaments and then I will play the Women’s British Open because of the score from last year and then the LPGA School. I think in September I might turn pro, something like that. I am going to play the World Amateur Championship in Mexico. I think after then.”

The best of the French players are Isabelle Boineau and Lucie Andre, both tied at 3 under par.  Boineau, a regular visitor to the Terre Blanche Resort, used her local knowledge to negotiate the Riou course.

“I just love this course and I am very happy to be playing in France. The greens are incredible and fast and can be deadly. I come here to practise sometimes so it helps that I know the places not to hit the ball, and the places to miss that don’t get you in too much trouble.”

“I hit two really good shots in to hole 10 and 18, but I had a four putt during the round, which let me down. Tomorrow I’m just going to forget about today and keep calm inside. I did really well today at not thinking too much.”

Also tied at 3 under par are Spain’s Maria Parra, Maha Haddioui from Morocco and Sweden’s Natalie Wille.
